About Us

After graduating UC Berkeley in May 2006, Eva Markiewicz, Katy Harrison, and four other recent graduates spent a summer in Malawi. They spent a few days at Lake Malawi, went on a safari and they taught science to children at local schools.

One school stood out as a ‘diamond in the rough’ so to speak and with a little help, they feel this school will give children a great education and help the agricultural city of Mzuzu. When they came back to the United States, they started to brainstorm ways to help the school. With the support of their friends, family, and even the aid of some kind strangers, they got the site up and running! Now the website is looking good and the fundraising adventure is just beginning.

Eva Markiewicz has a BS in Mechanical Engineering, and now works at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard in Boston, MA. Her professional interests are in renewable energy, water policy/ technology, green buildings, and unearthing the genetic code quickly. In her free time she enjoys running, traveling to places she’s never been, and spending time with good friends.

Katy Harrison has a degree in Computer Science and works in Redwood City, CA at DreamWorks Animation. Katy recently worked on Shrek The Third and is currently working on Madagascar 2. In her free time, Katy enjoys scuba diving in Monterey, skiing, traveling and drawing.

Spencer Ahrens has a BS in Mechanical Engineering and is a graduate student at MIT; he works in the Aerospace Controls Lab at MIT implementing vision control of small aerial vehicles. He is interested in everything and anything related to engineering, however, he also has a soft spot for renewable energy technology. Spencer enjoys biking, climbing, reading about crazy new research on the web, and ‘chilling’ with family and friends. You can learn more about Spencer and his work here.

Charles Lee has a BS in Computer Science from UC Berkeley. He works at Volkswagon in Palo Alto and enjoys playing soccer, bike riding, and traveling.
